Theme 3: Sustainable Use of Agro-Biodiversity

The management of agro-biodiversity – the basis of food security and well-being for the poor -- is under pressure from globalization, population growth, climate change and inadequate institutional capacity. New approaches must be rooted in local perspectives, yet embrace broad contextual analyses.

The main goals and outputs are:

  • Clearer linkages between biodiversity and poverty alleviation
  • Options for sustainable management, use and marketing of genetic resources by small producers
  • Institutional development for up-scaling of viable options
  • Pro-poor bio-tech applications and intellectual property right regimes
  • Improved locally-adapted crop varieties and animal breeds, local management and market access
